Stopping smoking is one of the best things you'll ever do for your health. No matter how long you've smoked for, no matter how many cigarettes you smoke a day, your health will start to improve as soon as you quit. Did you know that smoking just 5 a day for 1 year will cost you almost £8,000!

How quickly will your health improve?

  • 20 minutes - Your blood pressure and heart rate return to normal
  • 8 hours - Carbon monoxide levels reduce by half and oxygen levels return to normal
  • 72 hours - Breathing becomes easier and energy levels increase
  • 2-12 weeks - Your circulation improves
  • 3-9 months - Coughs, wheezing and breathing problems improve as lung function increases by up to 10%
  • 1 year - Risk of dying from heart disease is reduced by half
  • 5 years - Risk of stroke is reduced to that of a non-smoker
  • 10 years - Your risk of developing lung cancer falls to half of that of a non-smoker
